Tonerplas

Tonerplas

Tonerplas™ is Close the Loop’s groundbreaking asphalt additive, which enhances the characteristics of asphalt. It produces a high quality road surface, that last 65% longer than traditional asphalt and contributes a major solution to the problematic waste issue of soft plastics.

In Australia alone, more than 300,000 tons of soft plastic is dumped into landfills every year. Not only is this bad for the environment, it is a monumental waste of a valuable resource that could be re-used and re-purposed into new products. Our contribution to solving the soft plastics problem is Tonerplas™. It is a product formulated with waste toner collected from printer cartridges via programs such as Cartridges 4 Planet Ark and soft plastics collected from the community by our partners Red Group via the RedCycle program, and Plastic Police in NSW.

The formulated product is melted into the asphalt mix. Our partner Downer Group then adds recycled glass and recycled asphalt pavement to the mix to create a superior lower carbon product with that results in higher quality roads.

Every 1 km of road paved with plastic and glass modified asphalt uses approximately:

  • 530,000 plastic shopping bag equivalents
  • 168,000 glass bottle equivalents
  • Waste toner from 12,500 printer cartridges
  • 20% reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP)

Compared to standard VicRoads specified asphalt, plastic and glass modified asphalt:

  • Improves fatigue life for longer lasting pavement by 65%
  • Increases deformation resistance to withstand heavy vehicular traffic
  • Consists of 25% total recycled material content

Now that is something to celebrate!!
